Company launches terror defense classes
Published: Aug. 22, 2007 at 6:30 PM
LONDON, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- In an effort to be more prepared for modern threats, a British company is set to launch a terrorism survival course.
British nationals who have travel plans in high-risk destinations can now take a daylong course that teaches survival techniques when faced with a variety of terrorism tactics. Included in the course are Sept. 11-style airplane hijackings scenarios, suicide bomb type situations and attacks with improvised explosive devices, the Times of India reported.
The U.K.-based 360 Defence Limited is the company behind the courses.
"Terror has come to the home and ordinary members of the public now realize everyone is a target," said Simon Leila, director of 360 Defence Limited.
Leila says 360 Defence Limited is responding to the fundamental modern terrorist threat.
"In the Cold War days, terrorism was about individual countries," Leila said. "In Northern Ireland or Kashmir, there was an end game with a defined political agenda. Now, there are terrorists whose aim is to maim and kill as many as possible. No agenda."
Counter-terrorism training is more generally offered to professionals at multinational corporations. Officials say 360 Defence Limited is an effort to bring terrorism defenses to the average person. The course will include pyrotechnics and acted-out terrorism scenarios with an emphasis on awareness, anticipation and avoidance.
